After traveling to Bird Island to take on the Corn Belt all-stars in 2016, Springfield's Riverside Park was the home field for the Tomahawk East as they faced off against the Corn Belt on a beautiful Friday night, perfect for a ballgame.
The Tomahawk East helped the Corn Belt get started, beginning the top of the first with 3 walks and a hit batter. Shawn Dollerschell of the Bird Island Bullfrogs followed with a double to put the Corn Belt ahead 3-0.
The host Tomahawk East all-stars began their half of the first with back-to-back hits from Springfield's Sam Baier and Essig's Tim Kehren. Kehren was thrown out trying to stretch his single into a double and that took the wind out of the Tomahawk East's sails. Baier scored via a wild pitch to cut the Corn Belt's lead to 3-1.
The Corn Belt added insurance runs in the third and seventh, but the Tomahawk East never advanced a runner past second base for the reminder of the game and lost 5-1.
The MVP Award went to Bird Island's Trent Athmann who caught all nine innings, went 3 for 4 with a run scored, and two walks. Logan Nissen from Bird Island was the winning pitcher, facing just one over the minimum in two innings of work. Lamberton's Alex Gerdes took the loss for the Tomahawk East, allowing three runs in one inning. In addition to Athmann, Shawn Dollerschell had a two-hit game to lead the way for the Corn Belt. Baier, with two hits, was the only Tomahawk East ballplayer to have a multi-hit game.
By virtue of the win, the Tomahawk East League will travel to a host team's ballpark from the Corn Belt League in 2018. Thanks to Springfield for hosting a fun night of baseball! Best of luck to all the teams as they head down the homestretch of the regular season schedule! See you at the ballpark!
